Flight Compensation Amounts: How Much You Can Claim by Country

If your flight gets delayed, canceled, or overbooked, you might be eligible for compensation. But how much can you actually get back? That depends entirely on where you were flying and which country's regulations apply.
Here’s a breakdown of how compensation works in different regions:
Flight compensation by country:
🇪🇺 In the EU
The European Union has one of the strongest air passenger rights laws in the world: EU Regulation EC 261.
If your flight qualifies, you’re entitled to a fixed compensation amount based on the flight distance:
€250 for flights under 1,500 km
€400 for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km (or within the EU over 1,500 km)
€600 for flights over 3,500 km
🚨 Note: Certain overseas EU territories (like Reunion Island) are considered EU flights — so the payout might be lower than expected even if the distance is long.
🇬🇧 In the UK
The UK follows its own version of EC 261 called UK261, with nearly identical rules:
£220 for short flights under 1,500 km
£350 for medium-haul flights
£520 for long-haul flights (3,500+ km)
You can only claim once, even if both UK and EU rules could apply. Choose the one that gives you the best outcome.
🇧🇷 In Brazil
Brazil's ANAC 400 doesn’t offer fixed compensation. Instead, courts award payouts for "material" or "moral" damages based on the inconvenience.
Examples:
Missed a vacation or wedding? You could claim moral damages
Spent extra on food or transport? Material damages apply
Compensation can reach up to R$10,000 per person, but it's case-by-case and handled through legal channels.
🇹🇷 In Turkey
Turkey’s SHY Passenger Regulation offers structured compensation based on flight distance, even though payouts are made in Turkish lira:
€100 for domestic flights
€200 for international flights under 1,500 km
€400 for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
€600 for flights over 3,500 km
The lira amount is based on the exchange rate when the ticket was bought.
🇸🇦 In Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has multiple compensation models depending on the situation:
€60 for delays between 3–6 hours
€180 for delays over 6 hours
If your flight was canceled, your compensation is based on your ticket price:
50% refund if canceled 60–14 days before
75% refund if 14 days–24 hours before
150% if canceled less than 24 hours before departure
🇺🇸 In the US
The US does not have laws requiring airlines to compensate you for delays or cancellations. Airlines may offer vouchers or refunds, but it's not a legal requirement. Compensation depends entirely on the airline’s goodwill.
🌍 In Other Countries
Canada, India, China, and others offer limited passenger rights
Most countries still lack strong compensation laws
In many cases, your only options are refunds or rebooking
